Training and Education

Training

The most important thing is to perform CPR if someone is unresponsive.
You can find some CPR training videos here:  CPR Training videos
If you are on your own, don’t stop performing CPR to go and get a defibrillator. If it’s possible, send someone else to find one. When you call 999, the operator can tell you if there’s a public access defibrillator nearby.

There is a free online course and will equip you with everything you need to know about Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED’s) and is provided by Cardiac Science –  click here.

I need to arrange defibrillator training – how do I do this?

You do not need training to use a defibrillator. Although AED’s can vary, they all function in broadly the same way. Once you turn the defibrillator on, it will tell you what to do. The device gives clear, spoken instructions and will not deliver a shock unless it is needed.

If you would like to have a look at how to use a device, there is a video available here: How to use a defibrillator.

Education – Heartstart

In partnership with WMAS, our volunteers provide “Heartstart” courses in our local community. Using a mixture of videos and practical work, you learn vital lifesaving skills which could help keep someone alive until professional help arrives.

Courses are FREE and take about 2 hours.

The course includes:
• How to call for help
• How to help someone who is unconscious
• How to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• How to recognise the signs of a heart attack
• How to deal with choking
• How to deal with serious breathing.

For details email us c/o padcfr@outlook.com or contact heartstartstaffordshire@wmas.nhs.uk

In association with ambulance services nationally and the BHF, our team also take part in the annual “Restart a Heart” day campaign by training large numbers of pupils in local schools to use CPR.

Education – Community Talks

We also welcome the opportunity to talk to community groups about the work of Community First Responders and how they can help us to help them.
Our talks also include demonstrations of how easy it is to use an AED.
